Eskom Launches Renewable Energy Offtake Programme to Accelerate South Africa’s Clean Energy Transition

Eskom invites proposals for 291MW Solar PV projects under its new Renewable Energy Offtake Programme. Service providers can submit bids by 19 September 2025 via the Eskom Tender Bulletin.

Eskom has officially launched its first Renewable Energy Offtake Programme, inviting service providers to submit proposals by 19 September 2025 through the Eskom Tender Bulletin. The initiative marks a bold step in the utility’s long-term strategy to reduce coal reliance and expand renewable energy capacity by 2040.

Driving a Sustainable Future

Through this programme, Eskom is issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP) for 291MW of Solar PV capacity, allowing large power users to secure renewable energy through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

These agreements—ranging between 5 and 25 years—will provide businesses with tailored renewable energy solutions that not only cut carbon emissions but also strengthen supply chains, enhance competitiveness, and meet international sustainability standards.

Meeting Growing Business Demand

The RFP follows a robust Expression of Interest (EOI) process that revealed strong demand from commercial and industrial customers for direct contracting with Eskom. The first renewable projects under the programme are expected to come online by December 2027, advancing South Africa’s decarbonisation goals and supporting long-term economic growth.

“This is a key step in executing our strategy to integrate more renewable energy into the grid,” said Dan Marokane, Eskom Group Chief Executive. “We’re not just focused on ending load shedding; we’re transforming Eskom into a sustainable, competitive entity while ensuring a reliable energy supply through a customer-centric approach.”

“By offering customised renewable energy solutions, we’re helping our customers transition to low-carbon operations while providing secure, competitive energy,” added Agnes Mlambo, Acting Group Executive for Distribution at Eskom.

Eskom’s Clean Energy Ambitions

Eskom is diversifying its energy portfolio by integrating coal, nuclear, gas, renewables, and storage technologies such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and pumped hydro. The utility aims to:

  • Deliver 2GW of construction-ready projects by 2026.
  • Reach 32GW of renewable energy capacity—including green hydrogen—by 2040.

This Renewable Energy Offtake Programme is a cornerstone of that roadmap, aligning policy, investment, and innovation toward a cleaner and more competitive energy future.
